Cape Sounio Layover Tour

A 5-hour run down the Athenian Riviera, timed so the best stop is the last one. Your driver takes the coast road through Glyfada and Voula, past marinas and beach clubs, to Lake Vouliagmeni, a thermal lake under a limestone cliff where you have a full hour to wade into the mineral water. From there it is on to Cape Sounio, where the Temple of Poseidon stands on the cliff edge, with two hours built in. That is enough to walk the ruins, watch the light change over the Aegean, and see the headland turn gold before dusk.

The schedule exists specifically so the temple visit lines up with sunset rather than ending before it. Your driver can suggest a seaside dinner spot on the way back into Athens if you want to stretch the evening.

Sunset timing

The Temple of Poseidon faces west across open water, which makes it one of the few ancient sites in Greece where the sun drops straight into the sea beside the columns. Sunset shifts through the year, so tell us your travel date when booking and we will schedule the drive to put you at the temple as the light turns. Golden hour crowds the cliff, and the two-hour window gives you time to find a quieter spot along the ridge before the colours peak.

Questions travellers ask

Is the Temple of Poseidon ticket included? No. Entrance is €20 per person, paid at the site.

Do we actually stop at Lake Vouliagmeni? Yes, a full hour. Bring swimwear if you want a dip in the thermal water. Lake entrance is not included.

Is sunset guaranteed? We time the visit to your date’s sunset. The weather is Greece’s call, not ours.
