Wine Tasting in the Peloponnese on an Athens Layover
UPDATED JULY 2026
You can taste Peloponnesian wine on an Athens layover, which sounds like a stretch until you look at the map. The drive west from the airport crosses the Corinth Canal in about ninety minutes, and the wine country starts almost immediately after. The tasting version of our Peloponnese tour runs six hours door to door, from €165 per person, and needs a layover of at least eight hours.
What the day looks like
The tasting is the last stop, not the whole trip. You cover the same Corinth core first: the canal, the ruins of Ancient Corinth, and then the estate rather than the climb up Acrocorinth. Doing it in that order means you arrive at the winery in the afternoon, having already spent the morning walking around ruins, which is a better sequence than the reverse for reasons that become obvious after the second glass.
The tasting itself is at Semeli Estate, one of the better known wineries in the region. Your driver handles the booking and the timing, so you are expected when you arrive rather than turning up at a working winery hoping for a slot.
What you are actually drinking
The Peloponnese is the most serious wine region in southern Greece, and Nemea is its best known appellation. The signature red is Agiorgitiko, a grape that barely leaves Greece and is worth trying for that reason alone. It ranges from light and juicy to structured and oak-aged depending on the producer and how long it has been in barrel. Whites in the wider region lean crisp and citrusy.
If you have tasted Greek wine only as retsina at a taverna, this is a different category of thing, and the gap between the two is the actual reason to make the trip.
The practical details
Three things to know before booking. The estate is adults only, 18 and over, so this version doesn’t work as a family trip. There is a minimum tasting fee of €25 per person, paid at the estate rather than included in the tour price. And the entrance to Ancient Corinth is €15 per person, also not included.
Everything else is covered: private air-conditioned transport, airport pickup and drop-off, and an English-speaking driver-guide for the full six hours. Your luggage stays in the car.
Booking it
If the tasting doesn’t suit your group, the base Corinth trip and the Mycenae and Nafplio route both run on similar timings without the 18+ restriction. The Peloponnese tour page lays out all three side by side.
To book, send us your flight details and we will check the timing against your connection before you commit to anything. No payment up front.
