Things to Do Near Athens Airport on a Short Layover
UPDATED OCTOBER 2026
The closest things to do near Athens airport are on the coast to the east: the seaside at Artemida about 15 minutes away by car, and the ancient sanctuary of Artemis at Vravrona and the harbour town of Porto Rafti, each about 25 minutes without traffic. On a 5- or 6-hour layover they make a calmer outing than a trip into central Athens, which is 40 minutes away by metro before you count the wait. If you would rather not leave at all, the airport has more than 150 shops, restaurants, lounges and exhibitions.
How far each place is
| Place | Drive from the airport | What it’s for |
|---|---|---|
| Artemida | About 15 minutes | The nearest sea: a walk on the beach and a coffee on the seafront |
| Vravrona | About 25 minutes | The sanctuary of Artemis, an ancient site with its own museum |
| Porto Rafti | About 25 minutes | A harbour town on a bay, for lunch by the water |
Drive times are estimates without traffic, worked out with OpenStreetMap routing. Opening hours and tickets below were checked against the Ministry of Culture. Checked October 2026.
Vravrona
The sanctuary of Artemis at Vravrona, ancient Brauron, is a state archaeological site with a museum beside it. The site opens every day except Tuesday, from 08:30 to 15:30 all year, with last entry 20 minutes before closing. A ticket for the site costs €5, and the museum has its own separate ticket.
The Tuesday closing is the one to watch. If your layover falls on a Tuesday, head for the coast instead. The other limit is the afternoon: last entry is at 15:10, so on a layover that lands after lunch, Vravrona may already be out of reach. The site also closes on January 1, March 25, May 1, Orthodox Easter Sunday and December 25 and 26.
Vravrona suits a short layover because it is small enough to see properly in an hour. You walk round the remains of the sanctuary, see the finds in the museum, and are back in the car with time to spare.
Artemida
Artemida is the coastal town in the same municipality as the airport, Spata-Artemida, and the closest place to see the sea. It is a residential seaside town rather than a sight, which is the point: a walk along the water and a coffee, fifteen minutes from the terminal, is about the most relaxed thing you can do with three spare hours.
Porto Rafti
Porto Rafti is the harbour of Markopoulo, on a bay a little south of Vravrona. It has tavernas along the water, and it is the best of the three for a proper lunch before your next flight.
A 5-hour layover, worked through
Say you land at 11:00 and board your next flight at 16:00. You are out of the terminal around 11:30 and need to be back by 14:30 to keep the 90-minute buffer, which leaves three hours. Twenty-five minutes to Vravrona, an hour at the site and the museum, and twenty-five minutes back still leaves more than an hour spare. That spare hour is what covers a slow queue at passport control, a late inbound flight or a coffee before you head back in.
Staying in the airport instead
If your connection keeps you airside, or you simply would rather not leave, the airport is set up for a long wait. It has more than 150 shops in its Airport Agora, restaurants and cafés, business lounges, and permanent and temporary exhibitions. The information desks in the public arrivals and departures halls are staffed 24 hours, and Sofitel Athens Airport sits directly opposite the terminal if you want a room.
Getting there and back
A car is the practical way to do this on a layover. Taxis wait at Exit 3 of the Arrivals level around the clock, or you can book an airport transfer with the price fixed in advance and a driver who knows when you need to be back. Regional buses do leave the airport for Rafina and Markopoulo, but on a short layover you want to control the timing yourself.
Work backwards from your flight. You need to be at the airport 90 minutes before boarding, which our Athens layover guide calls the T-90 rule, and that includes passport control on the way out if you are leaving Schengen. Keep your luggage simple: bags checked through to your final destination transfer without you, and a carry-on rides with you in the car.
If you have 5 hours, our 5-hour layover guide works through the time math. With 6 hours or more, our customizable tour puts you with a private driver for four hours, timed around your flight.
