Overnight Layover in Athens: Airport Hotel, Terminal or a Night in the City
UPDATED OCTOBER 2026
An overnight layover in Athens comes down to three choices: stay in the terminal, sleep at the hotel opposite it, or spend the night in the city and see some of it in the morning. Which one makes sense depends mostly on when your next flight leaves. If you board after about 14:30, a night in Athens and a morning at the Acropolis fits easily.
The time math
Work backwards from your next flight. You want to be back at the airport 90 minutes before boarding, which our Athens layover guide calls the T-90 rule, and that buffer covers check-in, security and passport control if you are flying on outside Schengen.
| Boarding time | What fits the morning |
|---|---|
| Before 11:00 | Stay at the airport, at the hotel opposite the terminal or in the hall |
| 11:00 to 14:30 | A night in the city and a morning walk around Plaka, back at the airport by T-90 |
| After 14:30 | A night in the city and the five-hour Athens Layover Tour from 08:00, finishing at the airport |
If you board before about 11:00, a night in the city buys you very little. You would be checking out at dawn to be back 90 minutes before boarding, and the hotel opposite the terminal gives you more sleep for the same night.
Sleeping in the terminal
Athens International Airport doesn’t publish a policy on sleeping in the terminal, so there is no official answer we can pass on. What the airport does publish is that its information desks in the public arrivals and departures halls are staffed 24 hours a day, taxis wait at Exit 3 through the night and the X95 bus runs around the clock. Whether a bench is comfortable enough to sleep on is another matter, and if you want a proper night, the hotel is the dependable option.
If you do stay in the terminal, check which side of passport control you will spend the night on. Once you have entered Greece you are in the public halls with the information desks. If you are connecting airside without entering, ask your airline before you fly whether you can wait there overnight.
The airport hotel
Sofitel Athens Airport is a five-star hotel with 345 rooms, directly opposite the main terminal and across from Exits 2 and 3 of the arrivals level. You walk there in a few minutes, and in the morning you walk back to departures without any transport to arrange. We don’t quote room rates here because they change from night to night. Check them directly with the hotel. It has restaurants serving food all day and a fitness centre with an indoor pool, which helps on a late arrival when you want a meal before bed.
A night in the city plus a morning tour
If your next flight leaves late enough, a night in Athens turns the layover into a short visit. Getting in at night needs a little planning, because the metro stops overnight. The last train from the airport leaves at 23:34, and the first airport-bound train from Syntagma leaves at 05:53. Outside those hours, the X95 bus runs all night to Syntagma for €5.50, and a taxi charges a flat €65 to the city centre between midnight and 05:00, or €50 from 05:00 to midnight. Checked October 2026. Our guide to getting from the airport to the Acropolis compares the metro, bus, taxi and private driver in more detail.
Staying near Syntagma or Monastiraki keeps you on metro line 3, so the trip back to the airport in the morning is a single train.
A pre-booked Athens airport transfer takes the late arrival off your mind: the price is fixed before you ride and your driver tracks your flight.
In the morning, our Athens Layover Tour can collect you from your hotel and cover the Acropolis, its museum and the city’s main sights in five hours, then take you back to the airport with the 90-minute buffer kept. Starting at 08:00, when the Acropolis opens, puts you back at the airport around 13:00.
Getting back in the morning
Give the morning journey more time than it needs. If you are taking the metro, remember that airport trains run every 36 minutes, so a missed train costs you more than half an hour.
Luggage needs a thought too. If your bags are checked through to your final destination they stay in the system overnight and you only carry an overnight bag. On separate tickets you usually collect them, so plan for a suitcase in the city or leave it at the hotel.
Other layover lengths: 5 hours, 8 hours and 12 hours.
